Fourteen 04:10
Fourteen (Written by Stewart Cunningham) When your 14 years old life doesn’t mean a thing When your 14 you don’t think what the future will bring You got your favorite shirt, a bicycle and a backyard swing When your 14 the girl around the corner doesn’t mean a thing She’s a beautiful thing When your 14 – your riding up the hill You gonna meet your friends after school You’ve always got some time to kill You want more than the world will give you You settle for Saturday Anything can happen on Saturday When Your 14 years old Maybe we’ll head down the pinball parlour See if there’s some free games left on the machines I heard they got a new game - it’s called space invaders Heard some kids talking bout it on the bus. On the way home from school Sounded pretty cool - sounded really cool Well your 14 years old Starting fires and sleeping in tents When you are 14, your clothes don’t fit you, your room is always a mess When you’re 14 - you try to runaway you don’t like authority - don’t like authority – still don’t And now you don’t even like your dad, or the fun that you once had You still remember all those days when he took you far away Who’s to say he might happen again might take you down to the sea Could happen any day, might happen Saturday Who’s to say – who’s to say. When Your 14 years old Che sera sera sera sera

Leaving 04:32
Leaving (written by Sean Greenway) Somwhere someone’s got an Armoury Collected from the knives that you’ve thrown Now it’s time for you to reap what you’ve sown No one’s worth it your own has been needed to bring you undone You lost your place out in the sun And on my last dance I better be the man He was drained he tried everything he can What he could wasn’t good enough It didn’t make the grade anymore Won’t keep the wolves from his door I owe you nothing x 2 I walk out this door wanna rip from it’s hinges Away from this old failed plan Still I found ways to keep myself sane Throw a spanner in the works With new tricks of the trade Got down on your desk Deposit the mess in your paperwork I won’t be back to dot the I I owe you nothing x 2 I walk out this door wanna rip from it’s hinges Away from this old failed plan Now it’s not gonna work, You’re all glorified clerks Pushing shit up a hill Till you’ve had your thrill For an admirable cause But what lies at it’s core… you can never see

about

Reviews for We Make the Music...

“The portents were there that it was going to be a very good album but Leadfinger’s “We Make The Music” makes a convincing claim for greatness in the space of 49 minutes. From the Who-like title track that opens it to the Hendrix-tinged finale, “Beside Me, Against Me” (with its shades of “Castles in the Air”) this is a bona fide Australian classic.”
– The Barman, i-94Bar, April 2011

“There are any number of tropes you might expect to hear on a classic rock album… The important thing is what you do with them – are you going to go by the numbers or are you going to really go for it ? Is it just going to be all present and correct or is it going to be all the energy you have, the sound of total commitment – heart and soul and rough times and rocking till you can’t rock anymore and then still dragging one more encore out? Leadfinger fall into the latter category – they rock and they rock hard.”
– Jonathan Aird, Americana UK, May 8th 2011

The third Leadfinger album – We Make the Music is a great collection of songs about the ins and outs of playing in a rock’n’roll band, it’s about the music, the ups and downs and the relationships, it will have you turning up the volume and punching your fist in celebration but it is also evocative at times, drawing heavily on the inspirational well of adolescence. We Make the Music is the album that won Leadfinger many new fans and broke the band to a wider underground audience.

After the swamp blues jams and big riffs of their previous album Rich Kids, the Leadfinger of We Make the Music is a more controlled vehicle, acutely aware of the past whilst kicking into the future. The now 4 piece line up had been gigging solidly for almost 2 years when they entered Big Jesus Burger Studios with JP Fung at the controls. We Make the Music relies heavily on the warmth that comes from using vintage recording techniques, giving it a sound reminiscent of classic seventies recordings by Big Star and the Rolling Stones. The band got to experiment a bit in the big time studio environment of BJB in Sydney’s Surry Hills, this time using acoustic guitars, mandolins and dobros, and with the help of Brent Williams (New Christs) added some keys and piano to the mix to make this the bands most diverse album musically.

The album was officially released through Australia’s Impedance Records on April 8 2011 with the vinyl version of the album out in July 2011, through Spain’s Bang! Records (www.bang-records.net)
Lyrically, We Make the Music is a celebration of the artist and highlights the good and bad that every band goes through – WE MAKE THE MUSIC, the ephemeral pursuit of dreams – THE PRICE YOU PAY, and teenage rebellion & confusion FOURTEEN. The timelessness of the songwriting on this album invites comparisons with Paul Westerberg, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen, Rory Gallagher, and Paul Kelly while the rough edges are a tribute to the band’s punk days listening to Radio Birdman, The Saints and MC5.

In a world where people would rather vote for their pop-stars than their politicians, the songs of Stew ‘Leadfinger’ Cunningham take us back to a simpler time when music told us a story: our story.
